💬 Conversation Starters

Would You Rather

Ask a would-you-rather question and always ask “why?” after.

6 min🔵 Expanding Language

Goal

Practice choosing, explaining and defending an idea.

💬 Theo is here today

Theo is in on this one, every way of answering counts: words, signs, pointing, or a talker.

💡 Why this matters

Back-and-forth talk is how children learn to listen, wait, answer and ask. Every exchange stretches how much language they can hold onto.

How to play

  1. 1Ask a would-you-rather (fly or be invisible?).
  2. 2Ask why, and wait for a real reason.
  3. 3Swap — let them ask you one.

Example conversation

You: Would you rather be tiny or giant?

Child: Tiny! So I could ride the cat.

Extra questions

  • What's one bad thing about your choice?
  • Would you ever change your mind?
  • Ask me one now.

Skills practiced

  • Conversation
  • Turn-taking
  • Listening

Materials needed

None — just you and your child.

❤️ Parent tip

Leave a long pause after you ask. Silence is thinking time, not a wrong answer.

Try it during

  • 🚗 Car ride
  • 🍽 Dinner table
  • 🚶 On a walk
  • ⏳ Waiting in line
  • 📱 Video call with family
  • 🌙 Bedtime

Same activity, many moments — pick whichever fits your day.
